on december 13, 2011, the comprehensive anti-spam platform of internet society of china (hereafter referred to as “anti-spam platform”) won the second prize of science & technology award of china institute of communications (hereafter referred to as “science & technology award”).
science & technology award is set to award the individual and organization that made great achievements or outstanding contributions in communication scientific research, technique innovation and development, high-tech industrialization and scientific and technological achievements promotion.
initiated by internet society of china (isc) in 2005, the anti-spam platform was jointly researched and designed by the mail service providers and research institutions, including 263.net, net.cn, tom, sina, netease and cncert/cc etc. in 2006, the anti-spam platform was officially put into use. by collecting, calculating and analyzing the spam data on the anti-spam platform, a serial of data bases were established to give real-time early-warning information, such as spam feature base, real-time updated blacklist of ip address, base of identified trustworthy mail servers ip address, recording base of mail server ip address and china’s dynamic ip address base. besides, the anti-spam platform opened several channels for user’s reports and then added the data to the system and unified proceeded. since the anti-spam platform was established, over two million ip address were labeled onto the blacklist and the number of registered users reached 1,600. the list of trustworthy mail server ip address was well developed with the coverage of over 89% email users in china.
the anti-spam platform bridged the technology gap in china, becoming a remarkable comprehensive anti-spam platform in china, even in the asia-pacific area.
during beijing olympic games in 2008 and guangzhou asian games in 2010, the anti-spam platform guaranteed safe and smooth email communication and provided all-round and high-quality services based on the identified trustworthy email server mechanism. the olympic organization committee and asian games organization committee fully appreciated isc’s assistance during the games.
in 2011, eastwest institute and isc jointly released the anti-spam report—fighting spam to build trust. in the report, the american experts expressed that china is on the right track against spam and will be a good partner. in china, most of the anti-spam issues were jointly tackled by civil society and companies within internet industry together, which made really efficient and remarkable achievements.
according to isc anti-spam survey, spam accounted for 63.97% of the total number of items received by the users in 2006, which dropped to 37.6% in 2010. british network security company sophos released a survey, which shows china ranked the second by the ratio of spam in the world at the beginning of 2006 and listed beyond the 12th since 2010, with the ratio dropped from 22.3% to 1.9%.
isc will continuously make contributions in driving china internet healthy development by strengthening technology construction of anti-spam platform, actively organizing industrial self-regulation, promoting publicity and launching international collaboration.
